Trails to Research Summer Course at Montana State University
Students interested in exploring research and STEM careers have an exciting opportunity this summer through the Trails to Research program hosted at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.
The Trails to Research Summer Course will take place June 7–12, 2026, and is a fully funded, week-long Course-Based Research Experience (CURE) designed specifically for Tribal College students. The program introduces students to hands-on scientific research while building foundational laboratory skills and confidence in STEM fields.
During the week-long course, participants will conduct short research projects examining how different substances affect the development of zebrafish embryos, a model organism widely used in biological research. Students will learn a variety of lab techniques and gain practical research experience that can prepare them for longer summer research programs in the future.
The program is open to all Tribal College students, and no prior research experience is required—only an interest in science and discovery. To be eligible, students must have been enrolled at a Tribal College during Spring 2025.
All accepted participants will receive full program support, including:
-
Travel to and from Bozeman
-
Housing in MSU residence halls
-
Meals during the program
-
A $400 stipend
The application process is rolling, meaning students may receive a decision within a month of applying. The final application deadline is May 1, 2026.
