New Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program Launches at Blackfeet Community College
Blackfeet Community College is proud to introduce the new Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program, an online program focused on Indigenous filmmaking, family history narratives, and media storytelling.
The new program provides students with an opportunity to develop practical skills in filmmaking, photography, screenwriting, editing, and media production while learning through Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural ethics, and protocols.
The Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program is designed to empower BFCC students to reclaim control over their stories, histories, and representation. Through community-centered and practice-based learning, students will explore how visual media can be used to preserve family histories, share community stories, and represent Indigenous experiences on their own terms.
The program reflects BFCC’s broader commitment to integrating Blackfeet culture, language, and Indigenous ways of knowing throughout the college’s educational programs. BFCC’s mission emphasizes providing accessible, quality educational programs while integrating Blackfeet culture and language.
Fall 2026 Courses
Students enrolled in the Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program will take four courses during Fall 2026:
- MART 112: Intro to Filmmaking & Editing
- PHOT 154: Digital Photography
- VISV 101: Intro to Visual Sovereignty & Indigenous Media
- VISV 210: Story Development & Screenwriting
Together, these courses provide students with foundational skills in visual storytelling while giving them opportunities to explore the relationship between media, identity, culture, history, and community.
Limited Enrollment
The Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program has limited enrollment, with space available for only six students.
Students interested in joining the program are encouraged to apply to BFCC and connect with the program team for advising and enrollment.

Reclaiming Stories Through Visual Media
The Visual Sovereignty Endorsement Program provides students with tools to tell stories rooted in their own communities, families, histories, and perspectives. By combining technical media skills with Indigenous knowledge, ethics, and cultural protocols, BFCC is creating opportunities for students to become storytellers, filmmakers, photographers, and media creators.
The program is part of BFCC’s continued effort to develop educational opportunities that strengthen cultural identity, student voice, and community connection. BFCC’s Student Success Department similarly emphasizes supporting students academically, socially, and culturally while reinforcing cultural identity alongside academic growth.
