Hoof Care Summer Series Provides Hands-On Training at Blackfeet Community College
Blackfeet Community College’s USDA Extension program is offering a free four-part Hoof Care Summer Seriesdesigned to provide participants with practical skills for caring for and trimming the hooves of horses, donkeys, and mules.
Led by veterinarians and local farriers, the series combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning. Participants gain experience with proper hoof trimming techniques, safe animal handling, hoof care, and common hoof concerns while developing the skills needed to confidently care for their own animals.
The third clinic will take place on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the BFCC Agriculture Building on the East Campus. This session will focus on trimming techniques for different species, common hoof pathologies, and additional hands-on trimming practice.
Participants who may have missed an earlier session can still participate. Course videos are available online to help participants catch up on previous lectures.
Complete the Series and Earn a Tool Kit
Participants who attend at least three of the four clinics and pass the final exam are eligible to receive a free hoof trimming tool kit. The final clinic will include a practical exam, trimming review, techniques for working with more difficult horses, and an introduction to blacksmithing and shoeing.
While shoeing will be introduced during the final session, the series is primarily focused on helping participants develop confidence and practical skills in hoof trimming.
September Final Clinic
The fourth and final clinic is scheduled for September, with the date to be announced. Topics will include:
- Trimming review
- Techniques for working with more difficult horses
- Introduction to blacksmithing and shoeing
- Practical examination
- One-on-one feedback and additional questions
The series is led by Tarek Isham and Jamie White, with Felix Nez, USDA Extension Director/Agent, coordinating the program at Blackfeet Community College.

Missed one of the earlier clinics? Participants can access course videos online, including the June lecture, introductory material from May, and additional hoof trimming instruction. These videos are a helpful resource for reviewing material covered during previous sessions and preparing for upcoming clinics.
