BFCC USDA Extension Program Launches Free Hoof Care Summer Series
Blackfeet Community College is excited to announce the launch of the Hoof Care Summer Series, a free hands-on clinic series designed to teach practical hoof care skills for horses, donkeys, and mules.
Hosted at Blackfeet Community College from June through September 2026, this four-part clinic series will provide participants with the opportunity to gain practical experience and valuable knowledge in hoof care while learning directly from experienced professionals.
The Hoof Care Summer Series was created to help strengthen hoof care knowledge and services within the community by offering accessible, hands-on education for animal owners and those interested in expanding their skills.
Learn from Experienced Professionals
Participants will receive instruction from experienced veterinarians, local farriers, and guest instructors, including:
- Dr. Tarek Isham
- Dr. Jamie White
- John Laplante Sr., Local Farrier
- Additional guest lecturers, community members, and farriers
The series will focus on practical skills that participants can apply to the care of their own animals and within the broader community.
What Participants Will Learn
Throughout the clinic series, participants will learn:
- Proper hoof trimming techniques
- Safe handling and hoof care skills
- Hoof care practices for horses, donkeys, and mules
- Training tips for safe hoof work
- Skills to confidently trim their own animals
- Foundational preparation to provide hoof trimming services within the community
This hands-on approach is intended to help participants build confidence while improving the health and care of working and companion animals.
Completion Incentives and Future Opportunities
Participants who attend at least three of the four clinics and pass the final exam will receive a free hoof trimming tool kit, including:
- Nippers
- Rasp
- Hoof Knife
- Hoof Pick
- Chaps
Students who successfully complete the course may also be invited to participate in future veterinary clinic events and may be eligible to earn $50 per hoof trim providing services within the community.
In 2027, Blackfeet Community College hopes to expand the program with a Part 2 Hoof Care Series, which would include:
- Basic horseshoeing
- Introductory blacksmithing techniques

All clinics are scheduled from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
